Our Grass Seed Calculator helps you figure out exactly how much seed to order—fast, easy, and accurate.

First Things First: Know Your Land, Know Your Goals

Before you even think about browsing seed bags, let's get a clear picture of your project.

How Much Space Are We Talking?

Grab your measuring tools! Knowing the exact size of your planting area – whether in acres or hectares for larger projects, or square feet for smaller lawns – is the absolute starting point for everything else. An accurate number here saves headaches (and money!) later.

What’s Your Zone?

Canada is a big place with diverse climates! Understanding your local Canadian Plant Hardiness Zone is like knowing your area's weather personality. It helps you pick seeds that won’t just survive the winter but will truly flourish.

What’s the Grand Plan?

Are you aiming for:

  • Lush Pastures for happy grazing animals?
  • Bountiful Hay or Silage to stock up for winter?
  • A Beautiful, Durable Lawn for your home or property?
  • A Protective Cover Crop to boost soil health and prevent erosion?
  • Solid Erosion Control for those tricky slopes or disturbed areas? [13, 14]

Your end goal is a big clue to finding the perfect seed match.

Lawn Seed Solutions – For a Beautiful, Resilient Yard

For those picture-perfect lawns that are both beautiful and tough enough for British Columbia's climate, Purity Feed offers a range of specialized lawn and turf seed blends. Here’s a look at what we have to help you create the lawn you’ve always wanted:

Sun & Shade Mix

Our most popular grass mix! This blend is your go-to for lawns that get a bit of everything – full sun and partial shade. It’s generally not recommended for overseeding existing mature lawns because the fescue species in it germinate a bit slower and might have a tough time competing.

Composition: A carefully selected mixture of high-performing ryegrass and fescue species.

Recommended Seeding Rate: 3.5 – 4 kg per 100 sq. m. or 7 – 8 lb per 1,000 sq. ft.

More details can be found on the spec sheet available on our website.

Ryegrass Overseeding Mix

Perfect for giving your existing lawn a boost, or for establishing new sports fields and fairways. Regular overseeding with this mix helps thicken your turf and naturally reduces weed encroachment without needing herbicides.

Composition: Comprised of wear-tolerant, quick-germinating perennial ryegrass varieties.

Recommended Seeding Rate: 8 – 10 lb per 1000 sq. ft or 4 – 5 kg per 100 sq. m.

Check out the spec sheet on our website for more info.

Microclover® Brand White Clover (Coated)

A fantastic addition to lawns, Microclover® thrives even in wet and shady conditions. It’s a little nitrogen-fixing powerhouse, meaning less fertilizer for you! It’s also drought-tolerant, staying lush and green with minimal maintenance. Regular mowing keeps it at a neat 6-7 inches.

Composition: Coated: 50% Seed, 50% Coating. It pairs beautifully with fine-leaved perennial ryegrasses, turf-type tall fescue (great for dry spots or chafer grub issues), slender creeping red fescue, and chewings fescue.

Benefits include: Natural nitrogen fixation, drought tolerance (ideal for BC summers!), low maintenance, natural weed suppression, and it’s cost-effective.

The spec sheet on our website has all the details.

Quick Ryegrass Overseeding Mix

Need a fast fix for damaged turf on sports fields or lawns? This is your blend. It’s excellent for early season overseeding or when you need super quick repairs.

Composition: Contains Candidame third-generation turf-type annual ryegrass and Replicator-4N tetraploid perennial ryegrass, which are champs at germinating faster in cooler temperatures.

Recommended Seeding Rate: 8 – 10 lb per 1000 sq. ft or 4 – 5 kg per 100 sq. m.

Find the spec sheet on our website.

Chafer Resistant Mix

Specifically formulated for new lawns to help combat those pesky chafer grubs. Plus, it boasts superb drought tolerance. The Microclover® in the mix adds nitrogen and even more drought resistance, meaning less fertilizer and watering for you.

Composition: 98% Turf Type Tall Fescue and 2% Microclover® brand White Clover (coated: 50% seed, 50% coating).

Recommended Seeding Rate: 8 – 12 lb per 1000 sq. ft or 4 – 6 kg per 100 sq. m.

Spec sheet available on our website.

Drought Smart Mix

Another great choice for new lawns, this mix is tough against chafer grubs and drought. It features deep-rooted, high endophyte turf-type tall fescue and creeping red fescue, which spreads to create a wonderfully dense turf.

Benefits: Built for new lawns, chafer grub resistant, superior drought tolerance, dense turf formation, low maintenance, and excellent disease resistance.

Recommended Seeding Rate: 8 – 12 lb per 1000 sq. ft or 4 – 6 kg per 100 sq. m.

See the spec sheet on our website for full details.

Sports Field Mix

Designed for the rough and tumble of high-performance sports fields and other heavy-traffic areas. It contains a high concentration of Kentucky bluegrass and is best suited to Northern and Interior BC.

Recommended Seeding Rate: 5 – 8 lb per 1,000 sq. ft. or 2.5 – 5 kg per 100 sq. m.

More information is on the spec sheet on our website.

Recommended Seeding Rate: 4–6 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. (1.4–2.7 kg per 100 sq. m.)

Purity Feed’s top choice and most popular lawn seed mix, trusted by homeowners and landscapers. It's blended with improved seed varieties suited to our regional climate conditions and is ideal for lawns with full sun or partial shade. Seeding Success: A Few Key Ingredients

Getting that beautiful stand of forage or a perfect lawn isn't just about the seed; it's also about how you plant it.

A Welcoming Seedbed

Think of it as a cozy bed for your seeds. You want it fine, firm, and as weed-free as possible for good seed-to-soil contact and moisture retention.  Avoid overly loose or "fluffy" seedbeds. A good rule of thumb? Your footprint shouldn’t sink more than about 9 mm (3⁄8 inch).

Just the Right Depth

Most forage and many lawn grass seeds are tiny and don’t have a lot of energy to push through too much soil. Aim for about 6–12 mm (¼ – ½ inch) deep on clay and loam soils, and a little deeper (12–18 mm or ½ – ¾ inch) on sandy soils. Seeding too deep is a common cause of failure.

Drill or Broadcast?

Drilling your seed usually gives better placement. If you’re broadcasting (spreading it on the surface), you might need to use 25% to 150% more seed to make up for it.

Soil Health Matters

Your soil's type, moisture, and fertility play a huge role. A soil test before you start is a fantastic idea to see what nutrients your land might need. Adequate phosphorus is particularly important for root development in seedlings.

Timing is Everything

  • Spring (April-June): Often the sweet spot across Canada, with good moisture and a long growing season ahead.
  • Late Summer/Early Fall (July-September): Can work well if there’s enough moisture and time (think 6-8 weeks) for seedlings to get established before the first hard frost. Keep in mind, fall seeding of legumes isn't usually recommended in the Maritimes.
  • Dormant Seeding (Late Fall/Early Winter or Very Early Spring on Frozen Ground): This is when you sow seeds when it’s too cold for them to sprout, letting them wait for spring. It’s a bit riskier and usually means you’ll need about 25-30% more seed.

Always check with local experts for the best timing in your neck of the woods!

Ready to Roll? Calculate Your Seed Needs

The basic math is pretty simple:

Total Seed Needed = Your Area (in acres or hectares) × Seeding Rate (lbs/acre or kg/ha)

Just make sure your units match up! For smaller lawn areas, rates are often provided per 1,000 square feet.

For our Purity Feed products, you can use the seeding rates we’ve mentioned or what’s on the bag. But for the most accurate calculation tailored to your specific situation and to explore all our blends:
