A solar energizer is about as low-maintenance as electric fencing gets. No outlets, no batteries to swap, no cord to run across the paddock. But like anything, it works best when it's set up right from the start.
Here are six things straight from the manufacturer's own manuals that make the difference between a solar fence that just works, and one you're constantly second-guessing.
1. Face the Panel South
In the northern hemisphere, your solar panel should face south, toward the equator, with a clear line to the sun. Even a little shade from a tree branch or tall grass can cut down how much charge it collects. Give it a spot with a clean view of the sky for as much of the day as possible.
2. Charge It Fully Before You Turn It On
Before you put a new solar energizer to work, let it charge for a full day in direct daylight. It's tempting to hook it up and go, but that first full charge sets the battery up to perform the way it's supposed to from the start.
3. Mount It Properly, Never on the Ground
Solar energizers are built to mount on a post, not sit on the ground or lie face-down. Mounting it properly keeps the panel clear of tall grass (which blocks sunlight) and protects the unit from moisture and livestock traffic.
4. Add an Extra Ground Rod in Dry Soil
Grounding is where most electric fence problems start, and dry, sandy, or rocky soil makes it harder for your energizer to get a good connection. If your property runs dry through the summer, adding an extra ground rod gives your system a better shot at working properly when it matters most.
5. Test the Voltage, Don't Guess
You can't tell if your fence is working just by looking at it. A simple tester takes ten seconds and tells you two things: whether your energizer is putting out the power it should, and whether that power is still there by the time it reaches the far end of your fence. If there's a big gap between those two readings, you've likely got a short, a bad connection, or vegetation touching the wire somewhere along the line.
6. Keep the Panel Clean
Dust, pollen, and grime cut down how much sunlight your panel can actually collect. A quick wipe with a soft cloth and some mild soap and water every so often keeps it performing the way it should. Especially useful advice for dusty BC summers.
