Electric Fence Starter Kit: What You Actually Need

A working electric fence needs more than an energizer. You need seven things: the energizer, ground rods, a conductor to carry the pulse, insulators, posts, connectors and switches, and a tester. Miss any one of them and you either have a fence that does nothing or a second trip into town.

Here's the whole list, in the order you'll actually use it.

What a working electric fence actually needs

Print this or screenshot it before you come in:

  1. Energizer sized to your total wire length
  2. Ground rods and clamps, more than you think
  3. Conductor: wire, poly wire, poly tape, or rope
  4. Insulators matched to both your conductor and your post type
  5. Posts: solid corners plus step-ins for the rest
  6. Connectors, gate handles, and a cut-out switch
  7. A fence tester

1. The energizer

This is the box that powers everything, and it's the one decision worth slowing down for. Size it by total wire length, which means your fence perimeter multiplied by the number of live strands, then buy roughly double that rating to cover vegetation and future paddocks.

One thing worth deciding now rather than later: plug-in, battery, or solar. It changes what else you need to buy today.

2. Ground rods, the part most people underbuy

Your fence is a circuit, and the soil is half of it. When an animal touches the wire, the pulse travels through the animal, into the ground, and back to your energizer through the ground rods. Skimp here and the fence feels weak no matter how good the energizer is.

The working rule is 3 feet of ground rod for every joule of output, with three rods as a practical minimum. Space them at least 10 feet apart, drive them as deep as you can, and keep the first one within about 20 feet of the energizer.

Use galvanized rods rather than copper. Copper reacts with galvanized fence wire over time and corrodes the connection, which quietly kills your grounding a year after you built it.

This matters more in the Interior than most places. Dry, sandy, rocky ground conducts poorly, so a system that tested fine in May can fade badly by August. If your fence weakens every summer, check your ground before you blame the energizer. For portable solar setups under 1 joule, a 3 ft T-handle ground rod is usually enough.

3. Wire, poly wire, tape, or rope: which conductor?

This is where your animals decide for you.

Steel or aluminum wire is the cheapest per metre, conducts beautifully, and lasts for years. It's the right answer for permanent perimeter fence. The catch is visibility, which makes it a poor choice for horses. Most electric fence uses 14 or 17 gauge, where the lower number is the thicker wire.

Poly wire is a plastic strand with fine steel conductors woven through it. Light, easy to roll up, and ideal for temporary cross-fencing and strip grazing.

Poly tape is the wide, high-visibility option. Horses see it from across the paddock, which is exactly the point. Wind load is the trade-off, so tension it properly and don't run it in long unsupported spans.

Rope sits in between. More visible than wire, tougher than tape, and comfortable to handle. A good middle choice for horse paddocks that need to survive a Kamloops winter.

4. Insulators

Insulators are cheap, unglamorous, and the single most common reason a new fence doesn't work. Their whole job is to stop the pulse leaking out of your conductor and into the post. Fit the wrong type and your fence shorts to ground every time it rains.

You need to match two things: your conductor and your post type. Tape needs a wide clip, rope needs a rounded channel that won't chafe it, and thin wire needs a small ring or screw-in. A wood post takes a nail-on or screw-in, a T-post takes a clip or screw-on, and a rod post takes its own fitting.

Corners are their own problem. A corner takes real tension, so use a proper strain insulator rather than trying to bend a line insulator around the turn.

Count on one insulator per post per live wire, so a three-strand fence on 40 posts needs 120 insulators. Buy the extra pack. You will use them.

5. Posts

Split your posts into two jobs.

Corners, gates, and ends carry all the tension and need to be solid. Wood posts, properly braced, or heavy steel. These are what hold your fence line straight three winters from now.

Line posts just hold the wire at the right height, so they can be light. Step-in posts are the workhorse here, and they're what makes rotational grazing practical, because you can move a whole paddock in an afternoon.

If you already have a wire or rail fence and just want to add a hot wire to stop animals leaning on it, an offset or extender bracket saves you building anything new.

Spacing depends on your animals and your ground. For horses and cattle, 10 to 20 feet between line posts is typical. Tighten that up on uneven terrain or the wire sags into the grass and shorts out.

6. Connectors, gates, and switches

The small stuff is what separates a fence that works from a fence you're always fixing.

Joint clamps and connectors. Wrapping wire around wire creates resistance, and resistance drops voltage across your whole system. Use proper clamps at every join and lead-out.

Underground cable. If your fence line crosses a gateway or driveway, you need high-voltage insulated cable rated for the job. Regular electrical wire will arc straight through the soil and drain your fence.

Gate handles. Every gate needs a proper insulated handle. This is not the place to improvise.

A cut-out switch. Fit one at the start of each paddock run so you can isolate a section for repairs without shutting down the entire fence. On a multi-paddock system this pays for itself the first time you use it.

7. A tester, and why it isn't optional

You cannot tell whether an electric fence is working by looking at it. You certainly shouldn't test it by hand.

A tester takes ten seconds and tells you two things: whether the energizer is putting out what it should, and whether that voltage is still there at the far end of the fence. A big gap between those two readings means a short, a bad connection, or an undersized unit.

Light-bar testers are cheap and fine for a quick daily check. A digital voltmeter gives you an actual number, which is what you want when you're chasing a fault. A fence alert light mounted where you can see it from the house tells you the fence has failed before your animals do.

Aim for at least 2,000 volts at the far end for cattle and horses, and 4,000 or better for sheep, goats, and predator control.

Should you just buy a pre-made kit?

For small jobs, yes. A garden and pet kit bundles the energizer, posts, poly wire, a ground rod, and connectors in one box, which is genuinely simpler than assembling it piece by piece for a vegetable garden or a small pen.

For anything bigger, build your own list. Pre-made kits are sized around a generic property, and yours isn't generic. The moment you have more than one paddock, an unusual perimeter, or livestock with opinions, you're better off buying the right energizer and the right conductor separately.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to set up an electric fence? At minimum: an energizer, ground rods, a conductor such as wire or poly tape, insulators to keep that conductor off your posts, posts to hold it up, connectors and a gate handle, and a tester to confirm it works. Most people also add a cut-out switch and warning signs. The energizer and the ground rods are the two most commonly undersized parts.

How much does an electric fence kit cost? It depends entirely on the length of fence and the energizer you need. A small garden or pet setup is one of the least expensive fencing projects you can do, while a multi-paddock system on acreage is a real investment because the energizer, conductor, and post count all scale with the property. Can I use regular wire for an electric fence? For the fence line itself, use conductor made for the job. For anything running underground or through a gateway, you must use high-voltage insulated cable, because standard electrical wire will arc through the soil and drain your fence. Regular household wire is not a substitute anywhere in the system.

How many ground rods do I need? Work on 3 feet of ground rod per joule of energizer output, with three rods as a sensible minimum for a permanent fence. Space them at least 10 feet apart in the moistest ground you have available. In dry or rocky Interior soil, plan on more than the formula suggests.

Do I need a different setup for horses than for cattle? The energizer sizing is similar, but the conductor is not. Horses need to see the fence, so poly tape or rope is the standard choice, and thin steel wire is generally a poor fit. Cattle do fine on wire. Both do better with the fence at chest and nose height rather than low to the ground.

Do I need warning signs on an electric fence? Signs are standard practice anywhere your fence runs along a road, a trail, or a property line where the public might touch it. Requirements vary by regional district and by what the fence borders, so check with your local authority rather than taking our word for it. They cost very little and they're worth putting up regardless.
