Prepping Calves for Weaning: Tagging, Marking, and Sorting Made Easy

Weaning time is busy enough — here's how to tag and sort efficiently without the stress.

Fall in BC's Interior means shorter days, cooler nights, and one of the busiest times on the ranch: weaning season. Between separating calves, sorting groups, and keeping records straight, there's a lot to juggle. But getting your tagging and marking done right during weaning saves you time and headaches all winter long.

Here's how to prep your calves efficiently — with the right tools and a clear plan.

Why Weaning Time Is Perfect for Tagging

If you haven't tagged your calves yet, weaning is your window. You're already running them through the chute, so you can tag, vaccinate, and sort all at once. It's efficient, and it means your records are up to date before winter feeding starts.

Plus, fall weather in BC is ideal — cool enough that flies aren't swarming, but not so cold that you're working in frozen conditions.

Step 1: Choose the Right Ear Tag Size

Not all calves need the same size tag. If you're tagging younger, lighter calves, Allflex Large ear tags work well — they're visible without being too heavy. For older or bigger calves heading into the feedlot or being kept as replacements, Allflex Maxi tags give you better long-term visibility.

Two-piece tags like Allflex hold up better than one-piece styles — they're less likely to tear out in brush or during rough weather. Make sure you have replacement buttons on hand in case you need them.

Step 2: Write Clear, Readable Numbers

You'll thank yourself later if you take an extra 10 seconds to write legibly. Use an Allflex ear tag marking pen with both fine and broad tips — the ink dries fast and stays readable through rain and sun.

Keep your numbering system simple. Whether you're using birth order, dam numbers, or a year code, consistency makes record-keeping way easier down the line.

Step 3: Tag Properly to Avoid Problems

Placement matters. Tag in the middle third of the ear — not too close to the head (where it can rub and tear) and not at the tip (where it's more likely to catch on feeders or fencing).

Make sure your tagger is sharp and clean. Dull or dirty equipment leads to ragged holes, infections, and tags that fall out. If your tagger's seen better days, it's worth replacing.

Step 4: Use Marking Paint for Sorting Groups

During weaning, you're often sorting calves into different groups — heifers, steers, keepers, sale animals. Instead of relying on memory or messy notebooks, grab a can of Quik Shot marking paint.

A quick spray on the hip or shoulder lets you identify groups at a glance, whether you're sorting in the corral or loading for transport. The aerosol formula is fast, weather-resistant, and washes off naturally over time. Different colours mean you can mark multiple groups without confusion.

Step 5: Keep Your Records Up to Date

Tagging only works if you write it down. Whether you use a notebook, a spreadsheet, or herd management software, record tag numbers, birth dates, dam info, and any treatments right away.

It's easy to think you'll remember later — but when you're dealing with 50+ calves in a day, details blur. Do it now while the calf's still in front of you.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Tagging too close to the edge. It tears easier and doesn't last. Aim for the middle of the ear.

Forgetting spare supplies. Running out of tags or buttons halfway through the day costs time. Stock up before you start.

Using worn-out tools. A dull tagger makes rough holes that don't heal well. Replace pins or upgrade your equipment if needed.

Skipping the marking step. If you're sorting groups, marking paint saves time and prevents mixing animals up later.
